Not at all what we’re going to end up getting.

My kids are 10, 8 & 4 and we’ll soon be in “need” of some new toys. I’m thinking a 2-seat go-kart with a cage and a 4-wheeler that can pull double-duty as fun to ride around with me and one kid aboard and also do work as a utility vehicle around our place. Any recommendations on make/model for either of these, or brands to avoid? I’d prefer to buy used if I can, but it all comes down to what’s available.

My dad got 2004 Polaris Predator (90cc) for me & my brother way back. It was quick, but not fast for 10 year old. I went around every corner side ways in it. It did not have enough power, so locked the rear tires slid my butt side ways to get it out,

I’m up on shifter karts much more than off road go karts, so I can’t be much help there. So ask me again after you put the race track in;)

As far as ATVs I much prefer the “sport” layout (rear drive/manual). Have a look around for used Yamaha raptors, as new ones can get pricey. Also a neat way for your kids to learn how to operate a manual transmission as they get a little older.

Eh, same width as a beetle, not much longer. Plus parts will be stupid cheap.

Unless you’re looking to spend $25k on a RZR or other side by side.

I was going to say a rage but too fast and WAAAAY too expensive. Maybe a 120 Polaris rzr

Guess I could end up with one big and one small 4-wheeler, but like the idea of the go-kart that the oldest can drive and take along a rider.

Wish I had a place to keep a toy like that. I keep searching for an old Attex 6 wheeler. My dad was a distributor in the 60s and 70s. We had 3 of them and a tilt trailer that held two. They were pretty reliable considering how we beat on them. I once flipped/rolled one at 25-30 mph and only put a small crack in it, landed upright, still running. Ours never had a cage but many people added them.

Nice! Didn’t know there were youth RZRs.

Definitely not looking to spend that much! But don’t want something too big or powerful for the kids.

Yeah, rear drive & manual would be fun. I assume you can still get those with a rack front & rear? The Raptors seem like they’re really just for fun, not utility.

There are youth rzrs and they get up to at least 500 cc before you need a license to drive them. They even make a 120 ace. The ace in the best way to put it is an rzr with one seat. Another way to put it is that the ace is an atv with a steering wheel and a roll cage

A word of warning, and I doubt that this will come as a surprise. ATV’s are very easy to get carried away on, fast ones with a clutch even more so. I don’t know how much experience you’ve got on them, but it’s not like a dirtbike where you can use your body to control a situation when you might be going too fast/too hard. Obviously you’ll be taking it easy enough with your kids on board, but if you’re out there solo “seeing what it can do” lol it can get hairy real quick.

I’ve spent a decent amount of time on them, and mostly in the mountains, so I’m not worried about my ability or level of caution. The kids will be much older before they ride the 4-wheeler solo - that’s why I’m looking for something that makes sense for them to enjoy as well.

That’s good. I grew up on dirtbikes, so maybe that is part of my problem. I’ve only been on ATV’s a hand full of times and thus I’ve had a hand full of really close calls haha. A friend of mine owns a large landscaping company and hes got a bunch of toys that we’ll ride around at his yard, I won’t even touch the ATVs anymore.

That RZR 170 might just be what we end up with...
